Since Darwin seems to have come up with a good hypothesis with less evidence than we have today, that was largely supported by future discoveries, I for one would say is to his CREDIT, just like Mendeleyev's gaps in the periodic table were subsequently filled in.

This may seem moot, but cells were known about two centuries before Darwin's time, and it was concluded that all plant and animal life are composed of cells decades before The Origin of Species.
