See, this is how we know these people are actually bigots: what they advocate in other countries. Here in the US, they say they just feel threatened by "attacks" on "traditional marriage," and "freedom of religion" (meaning, freedom to discriminate as consistent with their religion).

But in Russia, they support laws basically criminalizing being out of the closet. In Uganda, they support execution of homosexuals.

I haven't heard how they feel about Chechen concentration camps, but it seems pretty clear what is going on: they are not cool with the existence of gay people, but know they can't get away with saying that here.

Hence the victim card stuff, and the noble love the sinner language. But give them control, and it goes back to "stone the queers" pretty damned fast.
