"I can't notice the social engineering and brainwashing I'm afflicted with until I see a movie from a few decades ago" - the comic
[Comic from Tumblr about how sketchy 90's movies may come off as now]

Although "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is now regarded as a 'So Bad, It's Good ' film, "Forbidden Planet" and "This Island Earth" are acknowledged as classics of Sci-Fi: and they helped destroy the old 'Pulpy' image of films of that era.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" gave Sci-Fi films the power & credibility they deserved. And "Star Wars IV: A New Hope"* made such the mainstream & popular genre it is; still in rude health to this day.
And those two by Stanley Kubrick & George Lucas were made decades ago.
So why are these released on Blu-Ray ...?!
*- Idiots whining about "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens" & "Rogue One" being 'SJW'? Princess Leia Organa. Lando Calrissian. (*Puts idiots in headlock. Knocks on whiners' heads *) Hello, McFly...?!
Brainwashing? Brain adjustment, yes; every decade demands that of anyone who lives through societal changes. But perhaps you were "brainwashed" in the 90s, and see more clearly now. After all, most of us manage to get smarter as we age.
In the early 2000s, I took the opportunity to watch old horror movies from the 80s, like Critters, and Ghoulies.
What I noticed was that for those types of films, the pacing was slow, and the puppets weren't that scary. And there weren't any kind of Jumpscares like in the Nightmare on Elm Street, or Friday the 13th series.
Point is, some things don't age well after a decade or two.
@ Pink
Ghoulies didn't age well in the transition between theater and VHS tape.
That movie was never much good. It was a lame knockoff of the short lived "goblin horror" fad started with Gremlins. This same fad gave us the half decent Critters as well as schlock like Troll, Munchies, Ghoulies and Mystery Science Theater 3000 gem Hobgoblins.
As we learn more we realize more, and also, we change how we understand things. Mantan Moreland was a fantastic comedic actor, one of those Vaudeville giants like Bob Hope or Abbot and Costello. He was groundbreaking in a way, being in integrated comedies after a spate of Race movies and often being the best part. But his performance leans on unacceptable stereotypes to a degree (but not always one that's dead; see the cinematic diarrhea Tyler Perry shits onto the screen, it only needs one Yes Massa to be its own minstrel show) and its not super nuanced. So some of it comes off poorly but a lot is still good.
Now look at 80s and 90s comedies, especially sexual romp comedies that are nightmares of sexually questionable activities, stereotypes and various forms of phobia. They are pretty rough and should get a little condemnation when appropriate.
Confused?
