If by “punishment”, you mean consumers exercising their free market muscle, then yes, that’s punishment. I haven’t been to a movie since 2000, because I got sick and tired of going into a movie theater and being insulted by the movie makers. Whether it’s due to just plain bad movies or liberal moralizing, I grew frustrated by giving my money to people insult me and fundamentally disagree with me.
I went to movies to escape and be entertained, not told I’m a rube for believing in certain values that Hollywood disdains.
Hollywood has no problem alienating half its audience, and their bottom line is “punished”, to use this article’s parlance.

verbatim: "I went to movies to escape and be entertained, not told I’m a rube for believing in certain values that Hollywood disdains. That is, for wanting to live IN A WORLD where people like me call the shots about everything and everyone else has but *one* right: to live on our mercy!"
You're frustrated that people disagree with you? Well, there is one solution to that; always agree with other people...
Don't like to be told you're a rube? Don't be a rube.
It doesn't alienate half its audience, it alienates just a tiny minority of whiny cry-babies.
The movie industry can't please everyone. Even "The Godfather," arguably one of the best films ever made, has people who don't like it.
And it must burn your butt that your personal boycott of the movie industry doesn't stop it from raking in billions of dollars every year.
Why can't you enjoy a movie you "disagree" with? I enjoyed Predator and Commando just fine, even though I personally rely a good deal less on rocket launchers to solve my problems.
A lot of good fiction in any medium is impossible to distill to a single message, anyway. That's why Ayn Rand is such crap fiction: whatever her merits as a writer she always demands that the reader see her moral in her work. You want your literature and cinema to show you a childishly simple world to match your childishly simple belief system. And if anything that conflicts with that belief system is even portrayed on the screen, you feel insulted.
You think too highly of yourself if you believe any part of any movie is directed at you at all.

Less than 30% does not equal "Half". Then again; You think Pi is a straight-up "3" and that Elohim favors idiots.
It depends which archaic notions you value. You might be a rube. Or maybe you're a bigot. Perhaps you're a moralistic prig. Or you might just be an idiot. Maybe you're a secret voyeur, and only go to movies so you can take careful notes about the things that "oppress" you.
Disney hasn't noticed your absence.
"District 9" was a critique on pre-Mandela era South Africa by Neill Blomkamp. But has it alienated this South African from his own people: certainly by equating the extraterrestrial 'Prawns' with the victims of Apartheid, and where they were ghettoised with, say, Soweto? Far from it. Judging by his first major film, South African Sci-Fi is in safe hands: certainly as far as the people of that country are concerned. [/"Chappie", "Elysium"]
If "Alien V" directed by Neill Blomkamp alien ates fans of the franchise, let us know in reviews after it's release, especially ratings via the likes of Rotten Tomatoes: verbatim .
Because due to the hype generated by just the news of who's directing this, it's not looking good for your 'argument'.
But then, only 'arguments' such as yours are formulated by rubes: Bigots .
I refer you to the character played by David James in "District 9".

It certainly doesn't seem to have had much influence on their bottom line.
Movie-making is a business. Movie-makers do what makes them money. If the kind of Kirk Cameron/Pure-flix/other Hugo and Jake* fodder that gets off shitwits like you made them more money than Star Wars and so on, they would note this and make more of the kind of Kirk Cameron/Pure-flix/other Hugo and Jake fodder that gets off shitwits like you, because it is a business and they like getting as much money as possible because that is the point of business. But it doesn't so they don't.
You may want to spend your leisure time 'escaping and being entertained' without the strain of having your preconceptions challenged in any way. I sympathise with this, and would recommend Tetris. I don't know if the person who came up with it approves of gay marriage, though; you might want to look into that first. Better safe than sorry.
