"Oh, she could have taken better precautions."
Bull-fucking-shit. So, what, I'm supposed to live in fear? Have a checklist that I need to look over before I go outside after 5pm?
WEAR BAGGY, UNAPPEALING CLOTHING -- check
NOT GO TO A BAR, OR CLUB, OR ANYWHERE FUN -- check
BE MALE -- che-oh, fuck, wait. I guess I can never go outside after dark, then.
I refuse to live in fear. If a man went out for a walk after dark, wearing normal clothes -- say, a pair of boot-cut jeans and a sleeveless shirt -- and ended up being murdered, no one would EVER, EVER imply that it was his fault because he went out after dark, or wore revealing clothing, or didn't go out with another male.
So why is rape different? Why is rape so fucking different that women need to "take precautions" beyond the usual for going out at night? I don't give a shit what anyone says -- if people say, "Oh, she could have done this," they're not being helpful. They're IMPLYING THAT IT'S PARTIALLY THE VICTIM'S FAULT.
Instead of telling women, "Don't wear revealing clothing; don't go out after dark; have a male chaperone; etc." perhaps we should be telling everyone else, "DON'T RAPE. IT IS NEVER OKAY. IF SHE'S DRUNK, IT'S RAPE. IF SHE'S HIGH, IT'S RAPE. IF SHE SAYS NO -- WHETHER IT'S BEFORE SEX OR RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT -- YOU'D BETTER STOP, BECAUSE IT'S RAPE IF YOU DON'T. IF SHE IS IN FEAR FOR HER PERSONAL SAFETY, IT'S RAPE."
The same goes for any male in that situation. If he's drunk, high, says no, fears for his personal safety... it's rape, so get the fuck off of him.
And so long as people can still use the "she was asking for it / was wearing provocative clothing / is a slut anyway!" defense, then we are still not sending the right fucking message.
