Funny, but it seems that conservatives like O'Liely, Hannity and Limbaugh are constantly ranting and huffing about some ridiculous thing or other (remember war on christmas?). Maybe Borealis meant:
"Thank God I'm not a liberal. It must be hell going through life actually knowing things and not being an asshole."
"I hate spinach, and I'm glad I hate it, because if I did like it, I'd eat it every day - and I loathe the stuff."
Blurb, that's definitely how it is! In a fairly spirited discussion, my dad once asked me, "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?" I responded that the two weren't necessarily mutually exclusive, that ignorance or error certainly wasn't a prerequisite for happiness, and that I would rather have the less-than-happy satisfaction of being right than the delusion of it and false happiness based on that delusion.
And Caphi, that's a hilarious way of putting it! If that's a quotation from someone, please post the source; I'd like to use it myself sometime!

Thanks, David.
I'd call my theory "integrity."
I firmly believe that believers of[insert whichever religion here] are perhaps more content day-to-day... in that they believe in absolute truths. It is much easier to take the shit life throws at you that way, but it's not honest. Fuck, if we can't be honest with ourselves, what do we got? Jack shit, that's what!
I dunno if I qualify as a liberal (I actually scored slightly right-wing on the economic scale on the Political Compass test last time I took it, though solidly libertarian on the other scale), but I don't see anything miserable about it. After all, liberals aren't the ones telling us that any sort of worldly pleasures are inherently evil.
I am not miserable very often. As an atheist, I'm not burden with the fear of God desroying the earth or eternal punishment for tiny "sins." Sometimes when I read posts from idiots it makes my sad for the future of our world, but I'm generally content.
Conservatives have a second term president in the white house, majority of republicans in congress, conservative supreme court justices nominated, the patriot act renewed, tax cuts for the wealthy, 'faith based' initiatives, weakened environmental protections, weakened labor unions, a war currently going on, among other things, but somehow, they are still furiously barking at everyone else, and complain that the country is going down the drain.
Funny. I am a liberal, a feminist, a
Gnostic Christian, and an evolutionist
and I am very happy. Being open minded
tends toward joy.
Oh yeah, all those conservative comedians are a hoot. You've got, uh, well, Dennis Miller isn't very funny these days, but then there's, um...
I dunno, the ultra-right-wing seems to have been pretty miserable ever since Obama took office.
And as a liberal, I wasn't aware that being miserable every second of every day was one of the requirements. I'm not constantly miserable, nor are most of the liberals I know.
Really? From what I've seen Liberals get a little upset and frustrated when injustice occurs.
Conservatives get really upset, scared and anxious about things that never happened, aren't happening now and will never happen. Look how pissed the consevatives are about health care, a recovering economy and protection of human rights.
It's a smorgasborg of fear, depression and anxiety over nothing
Actually I feel quite excellent.
As an atheist, and a liberal, I think I can state with certainty that your assertion that all liberals (and by extension probably all atheists) must be constantly miserable, is false.
My life is good. I am not burdened by the irrational fear of skydaddy's wrath, nor am I afraid of the things in this universe that I do not understand. I rather welcome the confusion as a challenge to learn more. Having lived long enough to become fully aware of my own ignorance, the drive to learn more has only been strengthened, but at no point in my life has the desire to reach for "goddidit" ever popped up.
As an atheist I believe life is what we make of it; so we can choose to be miserable misanthropists such as yourself, or we can choose to celebrate life and it's many pleasures and rewards. You see I recognise the value of life, just as I recognise the value of knowledge and understanding, which, by the way, your religious bigotry seems incapable of.
"Thank God I'm not a liberal. It must be hell going through life that constantly miserable"
Well, you'd better start thanking someone else then. Say... Satan. It's the only possible reason why all those 'miserable' Liberals are all now deliriously happy. After all...:
